Vine Pruning

Quality pruning requires the right tools. However, tools designed for home gardeners can vary significantly in price and quality. Choosing the most suitable ones will make the task easier and reduce the risk of damaging the plants. A small garden can be managed with just a few basic tools, but a larger garden may require specialized equipment. The primary tools used by most gardeners are pruning shears and loppers. For larger areas with many plants, hedge trimmers, pole pruners, and saws may also be beneficial.

Hand Pruners

Most hand-held pruners are designed to cut branches up to 1.3 cm in diameter and come in two types: anvil and bypass. Never twist the pruners while cutting, as this can damage the plant tissue. If a clean cut cannot be made, the branch is too thick, and a stronger tool with longer handles should be used. In anvil pruners, the cutting blade moves past a stationary blade, preventing damage to the branch on the opposite side. High-quality anvil pruners can be sharpened, and their handles can be easily replaced.

Two-Handed Loppers

Two-handed loppers feature long handles (approximately 38–89 cm) and provide greater cutting power. They are also easier to handle and reach further. Loppers are available in the same basic designs as hand pruners: anvil or bypass. Some models have adjustable cutting power and cushioned handles for comfort.
